Flávio Bolsonaro to Washington for July 6 hearing against 25% U.S. tariff on Brazilian goods

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a pre‑candidate for Brazil’s presidency, confirmed he will travel to the United States for a public hearing before the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) on July 6. The hearing will address a proposed Section 301 investigation that could impose a 25 % tariff on a wide range of Brazilian exports. Bolsonaro says he will defend Brazilian exporters and seek a negotiated solution.

Brazil’s foreign ministry (Itamaraty) issued a social‑media statement defending the government’s stance, labeling opposition critics as “traitors” and describing the tariff proposal as an attempt at external interference in Brazil’s justice system. The ministry noted that Section 301 hearings normally involve only private sector and civil‑society participants, not government officials, and highlighted Brazil’s two written defenses and diplomatic consultations with U.S. officials since the investigation began in July 2025. The USTR’s final recommendation still awaits a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump.
