FNPL calls for aid for French dairy farmers facing drought
The National Federation of Dairy Producers (FNPL) is calling for urgent government and industry intervention to support French dairy farmers facing a severe drought and forage shortages. During the Sommet de l’Élevage, representatives warned that the lack of rainfall is compromising late-season grass growth, threatening to accelerate the depletion of livestock herds.
A primary point of contention is the National Solidarity Indemnity (ISN) mechanism. The FNPL argues that the satellite-based index used to calculate losses is inaccurate; while the index reports production losses of 30% to 40%, farmers report actual forage losses between 50% and 60%. The federation is seeking clearer compensation and financial aid to purchase necessary forage.
In addition to environmental challenges, the FNPL is demanding better milk prices. Industry representatives noted that milk prices dropped in the spring, and they are calling for an increase of approximately 50 to 60 euros per 1,000 liters to ensure profitability. The crisis is further compounded by commercial tensions, such as Savencia’s recent decision to end its relationship with the Les 3 Rivières cooperative.
