Foggia Mayor Maria Aida Episcopo Resigns Amid Political Crisis

Maria Aida Episcopo, the mayor of Foggia, Italy, has officially submitted her resignation. The decision came after a council meeting was unable to achieve a quorum, leaving the administration without the legal majority needed to approve the city budget.

Episcopo had attempted to restore stability by reshuffling the municipal cabinet, revoking delegations from two advisers and appointing a new socialist assessor, but the move failed to rebuild coalition support. In a live Facebook broadcast she said she was “sfiduciata nei numeri” (lost confidence in the numbers) and therefore stepped down. Under Italian law she now enters a 20‑day period during which she may withdraw the resignation before it becomes final.

The resignation marks the collapse of the Campo Largo coalition that had united the Democratic Party, the Five Star Movement and local civic lists, which had originally elected her with 52.78% of the vote on 24 October.
