Western Achaea wildfire prompts emergency response and inspections
A large wildfire broke out on 1 August 2026 in the Skáloma area of Fokida, Western Achaea, Greece. The fire burned extensive agricultural and forest land, destroying olive groves, vineyards, wheat fields and damaging irrigation networks. Eight buildings in the municipality of Dori were reported damaged.
The disaster triggered a coordinated response: former prime minister and MP George Papandreou kept constant contact with Aigialeia mayor Panagiotis Andriopoulos to monitor firefighting operations; Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Kostas Katsafados led on‑site inspections, announced a request to declare the affected communities a state of emergency, and outlined compensation procedures for farmers and homeowners, including 100 % reimbursement for rebuilding costs. Local officials are preparing rapid aid distribution and further assessments to restore the region.
