Fondation Beyeler expands Swiss campus with new Peter Zumthor buildings

Fondation Beyeler is expanding its campus near Basel, Switzerland, through the addition of three new structures designed by architect Peter Zumthor. The expansion includes the Wyss Museum, which provides approximately 1,500 square meters of gallery space across three floors, the Ammann Pavilion for cultural events and lounging, and the Erlen Gatehouse for art logistics and staff operations.

The project also incorporates the previously private Erlengarten, doubling the museum’s parkland and integrating the landscape into the collection route. While the original Renzo Piano-designed museum remains operational, the new ensemble will begin a limited preview phase on September 26, with full regular operation scheduled to commence on January 15.

The new facilities aim to expand the institution’s physical and conceptual capacity, allowing for more diverse displays of its collection, which includes works by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Claude Monet.
