Fondation Beyeler expands with three new Peter Zumthor buildings
The Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, Switzerland, is expanding its museum complex through a new ensemble of three buildings designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. The expansion complements the existing structure designed by Renzo Piano and includes the Wyss Museum, the Ammann Pavilion, and the Erlen Torhaus.
Zumthor opted to distribute various functions across these three distinct structures rather than a single large extension to avoid a monolithic design. The Wyss Museum, the largest of the new additions, features a Y-shaped floor plan that incorporates existing trees and provides views of the Black Forest and the Jura region. The construction utilizes locally sourced Jura limestone and features rammed concrete facades.
In addition to the new buildings, the project involves the restoration of historic structures and the expansion of the museum's park. This includes opening nearly 10,000 square meters of previously private gardens, meadows, and water features to the public. A gradual opening phase begins on September 26, 2026, with the official grand opening scheduled for January 15, 2027.
