Fontainebleau forest fire prompts arson probe and nationwide donation drive

A massive wildfire that broke out on 12 July 2026 in the Fontainebleau forest of Seine-et-Marne burned more than 2,000 hectares of vegetation. Around 800 firefighters and emergency crews were deployed to contain the blaze.

French authorities detained an 18‑year‑old volunteer firefighter on suspicion of arson. The suspect initially admitted to igniting dry brush with a lighter and gasoline, but later withdrew his confession, leaving the investigation open under the presumption of innocence.

In response to the destruction of the UNESCO‑listed forest, the French Heritage Foundation launched a national fundraising campaign aimed at raising €2 million to restore the area. Within days, the public donation platform recorded roughly €130,000, with contributions specifically for Fontainebleau approaching double that amount. The initiative is positioned as a complement to other regional aid efforts for French forests damaged by the same fire season.
