Fonte Laurentina environmental alarm over toxic landfill fires

An environmental emergency is unfolding in the Fonte Laurentina area near Rome, where fires have been burning for two weeks in what residents claim is an illegal, un-remediated landfill. The fires have released toxic fumes, with Arpa Lazio reporting dioxin concentrations that are “widely above the safety and attention thresholds recommended by the WHO.”

Local residents, fearing the dispersal of friable asbestos fibers, have been forced to stay indoors with windows sealed. The Rome Prosecutor's Office has placed the entire area under seizure, and the Ecomafia Commission has launched an investigation. The Ministry of the Environment has also requested urgent clarifications from local authorities.

Community leaders have expressed frustration, noting that the landfill was reported as early as 2014. Residents are now demanding extraordinary sanitation of local schools before the September reopening and are concerned about the potential for significant property devaluation in the region.
