Food delivery platforms show growth amid market consolidation rumors

The food delivery sector is showing resilience despite broader shifts in consumer spending. While US retail sales saw a 0.6 percent decline in July, delivery platforms such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Instacart reported significant growth. This trend suggests that consumers are prioritizing the convenience of doorstep delivery for both restaurant meals and essential groceries, even as they become more price-conscious in other areas.

DoorDash is expanding its infrastructure by adding more regional grocery retailers and enabling orders via SNAP food assistance through Kroger. This move positions delivery apps as essential tools for daily needs rather than just luxury services.

In the European market, Delivery Hero has seen its stock rise 62 percent since the beginning of the year, fueled by speculation regarding a potential multi-billion dollar acquisition by Uber. Reports indicate that advanced negotiations between the two companies are underway, which could significantly strengthen Uber’s international presence and continue a broader wave of consolidation within the global delivery industry.
