Food safety authorities in Egypt and Syria implement new oversight measures

Authorities in Egypt and Syria have taken separate actions to improve food safety and combat illegal trade. In Fayoum, Egypt, the Directorate of Supply and Internal Trade seized 400 kilograms of spoiled meat that had been slaughtered outside of government facilities. Inspections revealed signs of disease and unsuitability for human or animal consumption. Additionally, officials confiscated 550 kilograms of subsidized flour intended for the black market, along with expired food items and untaxed cigarettes.

In Homs, Syria, the Directorate of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection inaugurated the Talbiseh and Al-Qusayr slaughterhouses following renovations. The reopening aims to enhance health oversight by separating livestock entry paths from meat exit paths to prevent contamination. Officials stated that the facilities will implement strict medical inspections of animals before and after slaughter to ensure meat safety for consumers and prevent the spread of diseases.
