Food security initiatives launched in Cameroon and Madagascar

In Cameroon, the Cameroon Red Cross (CRC) has distributed food aid to over 330 vulnerable households in the Mayo-Tsanaga and Mayo-Sava departments. Supported by donations from the import-export company Koya S.A., the initiative provided 200 bags of rice to combat food insecurity driven by cross-border security issues, extreme climate pressures, and recent accidental fires. The distribution included 167 households in Magoumaz and Zimangayak, as well as 166 households in the border commune of Kolofata.

In Madagascar, the State Procurement of Madagascar (SPM) purchased 37 tonnes of paddy from rice farmers in the Bongolava region. This direct purchase, set at 1,500 ariary per kilo, aims to regulate market prices and protect local farmers' incomes from speculation. While the government prioritizes local paddy to support domestic producers, Madagascar still anticipates significant imports to meet national needs. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates a total import requirement of 800,000 tonnes for 2026, with 415,000 tonnes already processed by customs since the start of the year.
