Food waste reduction efforts highlighted in Austria and Germany

In Austria, more than 3,000 tons of food are wasted daily, equivalent to approximately 140 truckloads. According to data from the Environment Agency Austria and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), annual food waste in the country exceeds 1.2 million tons. The WWF reports that over half of this waste occurs in private households, primarily due to improper storage and purchasing more than is needed.

The WWF is calling on policymakers to establish binding reduction targets across the entire supply chain and to improve conditions for food donations. Proposed measures include tax incentives, clearer liability rules for donating companies, and increased funding for food distribution.

In Germany, efforts to combat food waste include educational initiatives such as seminars hosted by the Verbraucherzentrale Rheinland-Pfalz. These programs focus on teaching consumers how to reduce waste through conscious shopping, proper storage, and creative use of leftovers to protect the environment and save money.
