Global and European food waste challenges

Overview

Global food systems face significant challenges regarding waste and nutrition. Assessments indicate that approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food—one-third of what is produced for human consumption—is lost or wasted annually, occurring alongside global hunger and issues of malnutrition and obesity.

In Europe, specific national data highlights the scale of the issue. In France, despite legislative efforts like the 2016 Garot Law, the country produces nearly 9.7 million tonnes of food waste annually, costing approximately 16 billion euros and accounting for roughly 4.2% of national greenhouse gas emissions.

In Germany, food waste remains a critical issue, with approximately eleven million tons of edible food discarded annually. Private households are the largest contributors, accounting for 58 percent of this waste. While a national strategy introduced in 2019 aimed to halve food waste by 2030, progress has been limited, though the German Food Association reports that participating retail chains and wholesalers have reduced food losses by 25 percent. Simultaneously, meat and sausage consumption is declining as younger generations opt for plant-based alternatives, even as rising meat prices pressure household budgets.

In Austria, annual food waste exceeds 1.2 million tons, with more than 3,000 tons wasted daily. The WWF reports that over half of this occurs in private households and is calling for binding reduction targets, tax incentives, and improved conditions for food donations. In Germany, educational initiatives such as seminars by the Verbraucherzentrale Rheinland-Pfalz are focusing on teaching consumers conscious shopping and proper storage to reduce waste.
