Foodborne illness outbreaks trigger recalls and impact Sweetgreen stock
A series of foodborne illness outbreaks involving cyclospora and salmonella has triggered widespread consumer anxiety and significant economic impacts for food service companies. A major cyclospora outbreak, linked by FDA investigators to iceberg lettuce processed at a Taylor Farms facility in Mexico, has resulted in at least 10,000 infections and two deaths.
Simultaneously, a salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños has sickened over 340 people across 27 states. This has led to voluntary recalls of various products, including salsa and ready meals, at retailers such as Walmart and Jewel-Osco. Major restaurant chains like Chipotle and Qdoba have also been connected to the salmonella cases.
Sweetgreen has seen its stock drop approximately 30% as consumer demand for salads wanes due to these safety concerns. The company lowered its financial outlook, projecting an adjusted EBITDA loss between $23 million and $27 million, a significant increase from previous estimates. Retailers and health officials report that many shoppers are actively avoiding fresh produce in response to the ongoing recalls.
