Foodborne illness outbreaks and economic impact

A series of foodborne illness outbreaks involving cyclospora and salmonella has caused widespread consumer anxiety and significant economic disruption for food service companies. A major cyclospora outbreak, linked by FDA investigators to iceberg lettuce processed at a Taylor Farms facility in central Mexico, has resulted in at least 10,000 infections and two deaths. Concurrently, a salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños has sickened over 340 people across 27 states, leading to voluntary recalls of products at various retailers and connections to major restaurant chains.

Sweetgreen has been significantly impacted by these safety concerns. The company reported a 6.2% decline in second-quarter same-store sales, with traffic down 2% and product mix down 4.2%. This triggered a 15% pre-market drop in stock value, contributing to a cumulative roughly 30% fall since mid-July. Although management emphasized that Sweetgreen does not use the iceberg lettuce linked to the cyclospora outbreak, parasite-related headlines have reduced demand for fresh salads. Additionally, the company voluntarily recalled jalapeños following a separate salmonella investigation.

As a result, Sweetgreen has sharply revised its annual same-store-sales forecast to a 7%-8% decline, a significant worsening from its previous 2%-4% outlook. The company also cut its adjusted EBITDA guidance to a projected loss of $23 million to $27 million, reversing prior expectations of profit. Beyond Sweetgreen, other companies like Chipotle Mexican Grill have reported sales impacts. Meanwhile, health officials continue to investigate five other active cyclospora outbreaks with no identified food source, including monitoring potential links to parsley and cilantro in North Carolina.
