Foodsharing Tartu hosts event to combat food waste
To mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on September 29, Foodsharing Tartu is hosting an event at Tartu Town Hall Square to promote food waste reduction and community sharing.
The event features a variety of activities, including a public lecture, discussions, and the collective reading of a food saving manifesto. Participants can sample meals prepared from ingredients rescued from shops and businesses that would otherwise be discarded. The food provided is plant-based to ensure inclusivity for vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores.
Kerly Ilves, the leader of Foodsharing Tartu, emphasizes that the movement aims to raise awareness and inspire individuals, companies, and the state to adopt more sustainable habits. While the movement operates on a voluntary and apolitical basis, Ilves notes that systemic change requires support from local governments and the state to create efficient, resource-light volunteer networks for food distribution.
