Global initiatives for food waste reduction
Overview
Various regional initiatives have been organized to address food waste and promote sustainable consumption practices.
In Tartu, Estonia, Foodsharing Tartu held an event at the Town Hall Square to mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. The event included public lectures, discussions, and the sampling of meals made from rescued ingredients. Kerly Ilves, leader of the organization, noted that while the movement is voluntary and apolitical, systemic change requires support from local and state governments to build efficient volunteer networks.
In Ardahan, Turkey, a panel at Ardahan University was held to observe World Food Day. The discussion focused on food security and conscious consumption. Governor Ömer Hilmi Yamlı reported that between 25% and 40% of food produced in Turkey is lost during the stages between production and consumption. The panel also addressed the economic potential of regional agricultural products, such as Ardahan cheese and honey, and the importance of increasing added value in local production.
