German automotive distributors face insolvency as space startup TEC secures $450M
The German automotive distribution sector is facing significant instability. Autohaus König, a major distributor for Renault and Dacia, filed for insolvency in Berlin in late August 2026. The group, which employs approximately 1,200 people across 82 locations, reportedly faces debts exceeding 212 million euros. While operations are being maintained during restructuring efforts, the failure impacts the distribution networks of Renault and Stellantis in eastern Germany.
Simultaneously, the Wahl-Gruppe, a long-standing BMW dealer, has filed for insolvency for six of its companies. The group operates 31 locations across North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, and Rhineland-Palatinate, affecting roughly 1,000 employees. Management cited rising costs and declining sales due to consumer spending restraint as primary drivers.
In the technology sector, the Munich-based space startup The Exploration Company (TEC) has secured 450 million dollars in funding. The capital is intended to develop a heavy-lift rocket capable of carrying 60 tons of payload by 2033, alongside a reusable space capsule designed to dock with the International Space Station.
