Ford launches universal EV platform to challenge low‑cost Chinese models

Ford Motor Co. has unveiled a Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform built on a modular architecture that aims to cut production costs by about 40 % and support a range of low‑price models, from compact SUVs to commercial vans. The company plans to debut its first UEV‑based vehicle, the Mustang Mach‑E, in 2024 and targets fleet and consumer markets that are currently dominated by Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and NIO, which account for roughly 60 % of global EV sales.

Analysts note that while the platform could leverage Ford’s extensive dealer network and brand recognition in the United States and Europe, it must contend with China’s vertically integrated supply chains and lower battery costs. The U.S. Inflation Reduction Act’s EV tax credits may help offset some cost disadvantages, but success will depend on Ford’s ability to achieve economies of scale comparable to its Chinese rivals.
