Ford Fathom electric pickup launch under $30k

Overview

Ford has officially unveiled the Fathom, a midsize electric pickup designed to compete in the affordable EV segment. Built on the new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, the truck is priced at a base of $28,350. Including a $1,595 destination fee, the total starting price of $29,945 remains just under the $30,000 threshold. In Canada, the starting price is expected to be CAD 38,690, which includes a CAD 4,000 federal incentive.

Production is scheduled for the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, with pre-orders opening in early 2027 and first deliveries slated for the fall of that year. The Fathom will feature a 50 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery providing up to 300 miles of range. The vehicle includes a spacious cabin larger than a Toyota RAV4, a front trunk, a traditional rear bed, and bidirectional charging.

A key component of the UEV platform's technology suite is a partnership with Apple to integrate Apple Maps via the MapKit for Automotive SDK. This integration will provide natural language directions, real-time traffic updates, and specialized EV route planning, such as battery preconditioning. Ford will also utilize Apple’s road-level data to support BlueCruise hands-free driver-assist technology through its subsidiary, Latitude AI.

Alan Clarke, Ford's Senior Vice President of Advanced Vehicle Projects, stated that the decision to select Apple Maps followed extensive evaluations of various providers, including Google. The choice was driven by the need for deep integration to manage critical EV data, such as precise range estimation and real-time charger availability by leveraging Apple's data on elevation profiles and weather. While Apple Maps will be integrated directly into the vehicle's native software rather than through a CarPlay Ultra implementation, the Fathom will still support standard CarPlay and Android Auto.
