Ford Motor Company pivots toward software-defined vehicles and digital services

Ford Motor Company is shifting its strategic focus toward software-defined vehicles and a unified digital ecosystem. The company aims to integrate hardware, software, mobile applications, and dealer services into a connected system that improves through vehicle data and over-the-air updates.

Key components of this digital strategy include BlueCruise, a hands-free driving system, and Ford Pro Intelligence. Mike Aragon, president of integrated services, described a digital-services “flywheel” designed to scale, activate, engage, and monetize services. Ford currently maintains an installed base of approximately 14 million connected vehicles to support these offerings.

To support this transition, Ford is undergoing a massive portfolio refresh. By 2029, the company plans to refresh 80% of its North American portfolio and 70% of its global portfolio by volume. This includes the introduction of the Fathom midsize pickup on the Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, as well as next-generation F-150 and F-Series Super Duty models. By 2030, Ford expects 90% of its vehicles by volume to feature updated electrical architectures and next-generation over-the-air capabilities to facilitate autonomous driving and digital revenue.
