Automotive industry shift toward software-defined vehicles

Automotive manufacturers are increasingly prioritizing the development of software-defined vehicles (SDV) to compete in a digital-first market.

In Japan, Honda and Nissan have entered a “technology-only” alliance to co-develop core SDV technologies, including vehicle operating systems, middleware, and standardized Electronic Control Units (ECU). This partnership follows the collapse of previous management integration talks and aims to implement shared systems in new models starting in fiscal year 2029. The companies intend to share the vehicle’s underlying “nervous system” while maintaining brand individuality through unique user interfaces and designs.

In the United States, Ford Motor Company is executing a strategic pivot toward a unified digital ecosystem. The company is integrating hardware, software, and mobile applications to facilitate over-the-air updates and digital services. Ford plans a massive portfolio refresh, aiming for 90% of its vehicles by volume to feature updated electrical architectures and next-generation capabilities by 2030 to support autonomous driving and digital revenue.
