Ford bids for UK military contract with hybrid Ranger 6x6

Ford has partnered with General Dynamics Land Systems UK and engineering firm Ricardo to bid for the UK Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) program. The project aims to replace approximately 2,500 aging Land Rover Defenders and Steyr-Puch Pinzgauers by 2030.

The primary contender is a modified Ranger Super Duty, featuring both 4x4 and 6x6 configurations. The 6x6 variant utilizes a hybrid system, combining a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine with an electric third axle to enhance performance and reduce noise. The vehicle is designed for heavy-duty military use, offering high ground clearance, reinforced suspension, and modular body types including troop carriers, ambulances, and command vehicles.

Field testing for the LMV candidates is scheduled to take place between October 2026 and January 2027. Ford’s proposal emphasizes utilizing existing UK-based production infrastructure in locations such as Halewood and Dunton.

Separately, Ford has issued a recall for 2026 Ranger models equipped with 3.0L engines due to potential exhaust gas leaks caused by loose mounting nuts. Repairs are expected to become available through authorized networks in the first quarter of 2027. Additionally, Ford New Zealand is conducting specialized testing to meet local regulatory requirements for the Ranger Super Duty's planned 2027 release.
