Ford military vehicle proposal for UK LMV program

Ford is proposing a military version of the Ranger Super Duty to compete for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) program. In partnership with General Dynamics Land Systems UK and engineering firm Ricardo, the proposal includes a six-wheeled configuration known as the HEX 6x6.

The 6x6 variant utilizes an “overlay bolt-on system” to convert the chassis and features a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine. Some versions may include a hybrid system capable of adding 286 hp via an electric motor on the rear axle, which is intended to enhance performance and reduce noise. The vehicle is designed for extreme environments, offering significant ground clearance and payload capacities ranging from approximately 1,982 kg to 3.8 tonnes.

The LMV program seeks to acquire roughly 2,500 vehicles by 2030 to replace older fleets, such as Land Rover Defenders and Steyr-Puch Pinzgauers. Proposed configurations include personnel carriers, troop carriers, battlefield ambulances, and command vehicles. Ford’s bid emphasizes the use of existing UK-based production infrastructure in locations such as Halewood and Dunton. Evaluation testing for the program is expected to occur between October 2026 and January 2027.
