Ford reveals 6x6 Ranger Super Duty for military and civilian use
Ford has revealed a six-wheeled Ranger Super Duty concept that could potentially enter the civilian market in regions like Australia, depending on consumer demand. The vehicle features a third axle driven from the transmission's transfer case, designed to improve traction, towing stability, and payload capacity.
Beyond civilian interest, the 6x6 configuration is being developed for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence's Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) program. In collaboration with Ricardo and General Dynamics Land Systems UK, Ford is utilizing the Ranger Super Duty platform to create a robust utility vehicle. This specialized version may incorporate a hybrid V6 turbodiesel powertrain and is designed to handle a combined mass of up to eight tonnes with a towing capacity of 4,500 kg.
Evaluation tests for the military project are scheduled to take place between October 2026 and January 2027. While the 6x6 setup offers significant advantages for heavy loads and motorhome conversions, it is expected to result in a larger turning circle and increased fuel consumption compared to standard models.
