Latvia discovers foreign drone in Alūksnes municipality

Latvian authorities have discovered a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the Liepna parish of Alūksnes municipality. The discovery follows reports from October 18 regarding a sound similar to an explosion in the area.

The Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) conducted a data analysis of airspace monitoring systems, which indicated the movement of an unidentified object within Latvian airspace. Although search operations were initially suspended due to insufficient data, the drone was eventually located in a difficult-to-reach forest area.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the object is a foreign drone. The State Police have launched a criminal process under the section of the Criminal Law regarding crimes against the state. The National Armed Forces have also initiated an official inquiry to evaluate the circumstances of the incident and the decisions made during the response.

No injuries to civilians or damage to infrastructure have been reported, and no further immediate threats to public safety have been identified. The military noted that regional security risks persist due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and associated military activities.
