Foreign drone discovery in Latvia

Latvian authorities discovered a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the Liepna parish of Alūksnes municipality. The discovery follows reports from October 18 regarding sounds similar to an explosion in the area. The Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) identified the movement of an unidentified object via airspace monitoring systems, and the drone was eventually located in a difficult-to-reach forest.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the object is a foreign drone, prompting the State Police to launch a criminal process regarding crimes against the state. The National Armed Forces have also initiated an official inquiry into the incident and the response decisions. No injuries or infrastructure damage were reported.

Local officials, including Dzintars Adlers, chairman of the Alūksnes municipality council, noted that official confirmation was pending from the State Police or National Armed Forces. Adlers emphasized that while border protection is the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defence and the State Border Guard, there are ongoing concerns regarding the security and stability of communities living near the eastern border.
