Forensic report finds medical malpractice in death of 22-year-old student
A 44-page report from the Forensic Medicine Institute has determined that medical malpractice caused the death of 22-year-old university student Ali Can Gül. The report concludes that a gastric balloon was incorrectly inflated in the esophagus rather than the stomach, which blocked the airway and led to the fatal incident.
The incident occurred on June 5, 2024, at the Private Mersin Ortadoğu Hospital during a procedure. Following an investigation by the Professional Responsibility Board of the Ministry of Health, judicial permission was granted to investigate General Surgery Specialist Dr. Doğan E., Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialist Dr. S. G., and Anesthesia Technician Y. Y. Ö.
Dr. Doğan E., who was previously detained for approximately five months, was released under a ban on traveling abroad pending the completion of the judicial process. The anesthesiology specialist was placed under house arrest, and the technician was released under judicial control measures.
