Spain wildfires spark evacuations and large‑scale emergency response

Multiple forest fires have erupted across Spain, prompting large‑scale evacuations and the deployment of extensive emergency resources. In Jaén's Despeñaperros area, around 190 people were forced to leave their homes as a blaze near the Los Abades site prompted the Andalusian government to activate emergency phase 1, mobilising nineteen aerial units, helicopters and a fleet of ground crews. A separate incident on the AP‑7 near Peñíscola involved a truck carrying plastic pallets, generating a thick smoke column and a temporary lane closure while firefighters contained the fire.

In Aragon, the Leciñena fire has consumed roughly 3 300 hectares and the La Fueva blaze has burned about 40 hectares, leading to the preventive evacuation of the village of Morillo de Monclús. The response has included three amphibious aircraft, multiple helicopters, dozens of brigades, and support from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, the Armed Forces' emergency unit (UME) and neighbouring autonomous communities. Authorities report a favourable evolution after night‑time humidity rises and wind subsides, but warn of a pending heat wave that could reignite the fires. The combined incidents have engaged over five hundred personnel and a wide array of aerial and ground equipment to protect lives, property and the natural environment.
