Wildfires impact Slovakia and Czech Republic as emergency services respond
Multiple forest fires are currently being fought across Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In the Súľovské skaly region of Bytča, firefighters are battling a large blaze in difficult terrain. The operation involves professional and volunteer units, utilizing drones for monitoring and Black Hawk helicopters to drop water. The fire, reportedly caused by the mishandling of open flames, has caused unquantified material damage to local forests.
Other significant incidents include a fire at Kojšovská hoľa near Gelnica, which was brought under control by firefighters, and a fire in the High Tatras near Popradské pleso that affected approximately 1.2 hectares. In the Czech Republic, a fire in the Obřany district of Brno destroyed six cottages, causing an estimated 5 million CZK in damage, while a fire in Karviná led to the evacuation of 16 people.
Additionally, Slovak firefighters continue to assist in extinguishing destructive wildfires in France, specifically in the Gironde department, as part of a European solidarity mission.
