Forest fires sweep through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland amid extreme heat
Severe heatwaves and prolonged drought have triggered multiple significant forest fires across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
In Germany, a major fire near Rodenbach in the Main-Kinzig district burned approximately 55 hectares. Police are investigating the incident as a potential case of arson. In the Ortenau district of Baden-Württemberg, several fires broke out in different municipalities, with hundreds of emergency responders deployed to prevent flames from reaching residential areas. Meanwhile, in Plauen, Saxony, a fire in the “Schwarzes Holz” area has been described by Mayor Steffen Zenner as the largest fire event in the region in 30 years, affecting roughly seven hectares of forest.
In Austria, approximately 270 forest fires have been recorded so far in 2026, a nearly 50 percent increase compared to the previous year. Experts note that these fires are a direct expression of climate change. In Switzerland, foresters have reported significant stress on trees, particularly beech trees, due to extreme heat and lack of moisture.
The environmental crisis has also impacted water supplies. In parts of Bavaria, extreme drought has forced municipalities to deliver drinking water via milk tankers to ensure supply.
