Galicia forest fires scorch 220 hectares, two blazes brought under control

Forest fires in the Galician municipalities of Vimianzo and Laxe merged into a single front that burned roughly 220 hectares of forest. The blaze was declared controlled shortly after midnight, with the regional government deploying three helicopters, one aircraft, 44 water‑bombers, 48 brigades and dozens of technical staff.

A separate fire in Ribas de Sil, Lugo, initially threatened nearby homes and forced a temporary rail service suspension. It burned between 140 and 180 hectares before being stabilised later in the day, after the activation and subsequent deactivation of a protective "Situation 2" alert. Authorities mobilised additional assets, including up to nine helicopters, eight aircraft and over 40 brigades, to contain the fire.

Local officials praised the effort of firefighters, police and civil‑protection units, while environmental groups criticised regional forest‑management policies and called for stronger prevention measures. The incidents highlighted the ongoing challenge of wildfire control in Galicia’s “Costa da Morte” region.
