Former Đakovo and Keraterm Sites Host Memorial Ceremonies for Holocaust and Bosnian War Victims

In Đakovo, Croatia, a traditional commemoration was held at the Jewish cemetery for the victims of the World War II Sabirni camp that held over two thousand Jews, many from Bosnia and Herzegovina, with more than 550 deaths. Amid the ceremony, Ognjen Kraus, president of the Coordination of Jewish Communities in Croatia, expressed his displeasure, saying, "It offends me that today we commemorate those who killed us," and called for prayers for all Holocaust victims.

In Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Keraterm detention camp hosted its first night‑time memorial program within the authentic camp space. Activist Edin Ramulić told participants, "I hope this will be the beginning of thinking about taking over, buying, and converting this place into a memorial centre." The event featured a theatrical performance addressing guilt and trauma, followed by a reading of the names of the 406 people killed or disappeared in the camp. The ceremony also recalled convictions of former camp commanders by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the BiH courts.
