Australian cricket captains appeal for Imran Khan's welfare
Seven former Australian cricket captains—Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor, and Steve Waugh—have issued a humanitarian appeal to Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong regarding the detention of former Pakistani Prime Minister and cricket legend Imran Khan.
The group stated they are writing “not as diplomats or political figures, but as former captains who felt compelled to speak up.” While clarifying they take no position on the legal or political cases against Khan, they expressed deep concern for his well-being, describing the treatment of any detained person as “a matter of basic humanity, whatever their politics.”
This appeal follows previous efforts by international cricketers to advocate for Khan. On August 23, 22 former international captains wrote to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif requesting improved medical treatment, independent health assessments, and regular family visits. Khan has been imprisoned since 2023 and faces numerous legal challenges, which his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, claims are politically motivated.
