Imran Khan medical transfer and legal disputes
Overview
Following the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s mandate for his medical transfer, former Prime Minister Imran Khan was moved from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad under heightened security. The transfer followed medical reports indicating the 73-year-old was experiencing severe anxiety and concerns regarding vision loss in his right eye. However, a dispute arose when the government moved Khan to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) instead of the court-recommended Shifa International Hospital. Authorities subsequently declared Khan medically fit and returned him to Adiala Jail on August 21. Khan’s legal team has contested this assessment, alleging that an eye infection has severely impacted his vision, leaving him with only 15 per cent sight, and arguing that the medical examination failed to meet court directives or include his personal doctors. International pressure from the sporting community continues to mount. Seven former Australian cricket captains—including Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Belinda Clark—issued a plea to Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, stating they are writing ‘not as diplomats or political figures, but as former captains who felt compelled to speak up.’ They emphasized that the well-being of any detained person is ‘a matter of basic humanity, whatever their politics.’ This follows a previous appeal by 22 international captains to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif requesting improved medical treatment and independent health assessments. On September 20, a specialized medical team from PIMS and Shifa International conducted examinations at Adiala Jail, including eye tests and blood pressure readings. While prison authorities deny allegations of medical neglect, concerns persist regarding reports of Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) in his right eye, heart palpitations, and fluctuating blood pressure. The resulting report is expected to determine if a transfer to Shifa International is required.
