Yi Huiman sentenced to death in China for bribery
A court in Chengdu, Sichuan province, has sentenced Yi Huiman, the former chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), to death with a two-year reprieve. The court found that between 1998 and 2025, Yi abused his administrative positions at the CSRC and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to accept bribes totaling 436 million yuan (approximately 65.4 million USD) in cash and real estate.
In addition to the death sentence, Yi was stripped of his political rights for life and had his personal assets confiscated. The court noted that the sentence was mitigated to a two-year reprieve because Yi confessed to his crimes, disclosed previously unknown illegal activities, expressed remorse, and returned a portion of the illicit assets. Under Chinese law, if Yi does not commit further crimes during the two-year reprieve, his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment.
Yi, 62, served as the head of the CSRC from 2019 to 2024. He was removed from his post following a decline in Shanghai Stock Exchange A-class shares. His career included high-level roles at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. He is the second CSRC chairman to face corruption investigations, following Liu Shiyu.
