Chinese corporate and regulatory corruption sentencing

Overview

High-ranking Chinese officials and executives have faced severe legal consequences following corruption investigations.

Xu Heyi, the former chairman of BAIC Group, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by the Beijing No. 3 Intermediate People's Court for corruption and money laundering. The court ordered the confiscation of his personal assets and the lifelong deprivation of his political rights.

Similarly, Yi Huiman, the former chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in Chengdu for bribery. Between 1998 and 2025, Yi was found to have accepted approximately 436 million yuan in bribes. The court noted that the reprieve was granted because Yi expressed remorse and returned a portion of the illicit assets.

Detailed findings regarding Yi's case indicate he abused administrative positions at the CSRC and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to accept bribes in the form of cash and real estate. The 62-year-old former official, who led the CSRC from 2019 to 2024, was removed from his post following a decline in Shanghai Stock Exchange A-class shares. He is the second CSRC chairman to face corruption investigations, following Liu Shiyu. Under Chinese law, if Yi commits no further crimes during his two-year reprieve, his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment.
