Former Indonesian Minister Gus Yaqut taken to police hospital during hajj‑quota corruption probe

Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) transferred former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, known as Gus Yaqut, to the Police Hospital Kramat Jati in East Jakarta on 24 June 2026 after he reported gastrointestinal problems. KPK guards provided close escort to ensure his security during the transport. Medical treatment was administered on 29 June, and KPK officials said they will continue to monitor his condition so he can resume the legal process.

Yaqut is accused of involvement in a massive corruption scheme linked to the allocation of Indonesia's hajj pilgrimage quota. The KPK launched the investigation in August 2025, named him a suspect in January 2026, and later identified additional suspects, including a former staff member and two travel‑agency executives. An audit by the State Audit Board estimated potential state losses of roughly Rp 622 billion. Yaqut was first detained in March 2026, briefly placed under house arrest, and then returned to KPK detention. The case remains under active investigation.
