Indonesia KPK transfers Hajj quota case to prosecutors
Overview
Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) continues its probe into former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (Gus Yaqut) over the alleged 2023‑2024 Hajj‑quota corruption scheme. The investigation, launched in August 2025, named Yaqut a suspect in January 2026 and later added a former staff member and two travel‑agency executives. A State Audit Board audit estimated potential state losses of about Rp 622 billion.
Yaqut was first detained in March 2026, briefly placed under house arrest, and then returned to KPK custody. He was transferred to the Police Hospital Kramat Jati in East Jakarta on 24 June 2026 for severe gastrointestinal problems, underwent surgery on 29 June, and remains under medical observation.
On 14 July 2026 the KPK handed over the complete case file, evidence and the four suspects—Yaqut, his former special staff Ishfah Abidal Aziz (Gus Alex), PT Makassar Toraja operational director Ismail Adham, and Asrul Azis Taba, head of the Kesthuri association—to the public prosecutor. The prosecutor has up to 14 days to draft an indictment for the anti‑corruption court, and Yaqut has said he is ready for an open trial.
KPK officials say the investigative stage is concluded, but medical monitoring of Yaqut will continue to ensure his health rights are protected as the legal process moves forward.
