Former Kerala DGP Tomin J. Thachankary found guilty of disproportionate assets
The Kottayam Vigilance Court has found former Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) Tomin J. Thachankary guilty of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The verdict, delivered by Special Judge K. V. Rajaneesh, follows a trial involving 95 prosecution witnesses and 269 documents.
The case stems from an investigation into Thachankary’s finances between January 2003 and July 2007. The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) alleged that he could not account for expenditures totaling Rs 64.70 lakh, finding that his acquired assets were 135.80 per cent higher than his documented income. The investigation, which began following a complaint by Bobby Kuruvila, identified various properties, including houses and flats, as part of the disproportionate wealth.
During the final hearing, Thachankary’s defense requested leniency based on his health condition, while the prosecution argued against such measures given his high-ranking former official position. The court is expected to pronounce the sentence later.
