Corruption conviction of former Kerala DGP

Overview

Former Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) Tomin J. Thachankary was found guilty by a Kottayam Vigilance Court of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The investigation, covering the period between January 2003 and July 2007, alleged that Thachankary could not account for expenditures totaling Rs 64.70 lakh, with acquired assets being 135.80 per cent higher than his documented income.

Following the initial verdict, which included a sentence of four years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹30.84 lakh, Thachankary appealed the decision. The Kerala High Court subsequently suspended the prison sentence while his appeal against the conviction remains pending. In his appeal, Thachankary has challenged the legality of the trial court’s verdict, arguing that the prosecution relied on “improper sanction orders.”
