Former L.A. deputy sentenced for aiding cryptocurrency businessman

Former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy Eric Saavedra has been sentenced to nearly two years in prison for his role in a conspiracy involving the violation of civil rights and tax fraud. Saavedra, 42, pleaded guilty to conspiracy against rights and making a false tax return.

Through his company, Saavedra & Associates LLC, Saavedra hired deputies to provide security for Adam Iza, a cryptocurrency businessman. According to plea agreements, Iza paid approximately $100,000 per month for round-the-clock protection, and the hired deputies sometimes committed crimes on Iza's behalf. Saavedra was ordered to pay nearly $100,000 in restitution to the IRS and forfeit various luxury items, including designer bags and shoes.

U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson noted that Saavedra’s conduct compromised the integrity of the judiciary and the sheriff’s department, though the judge cited Saavedra’s extensive cooperation as a factor in the sentencing.
