Former NFL Running Back Chris Johnson Announces ALS Diagnosis, Revives Ice Bucket Challenge

Former Tennessee Titans star Chris Johnson disclosed that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2025 at age 39. In an emotional interview he said, “You have two choices. You can give up, or you can fight. I chose to fight,” and launched a campaign to reignite the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, urging fans and athletes to post videos and donate to ALS research.

Former teammate quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick reflected on their bond, recalling a signed football after his 100th career touchdown and expressing support for Johnson. Fitzpatrick also noted studies showing NFL players are four times more likely to develop ALS than the general population, underscoring concerns about head‑trauma risks.
