Former PlayStation Exec Shawn Layden Calls for Stronger Xbox Competition
Shawn Layden, who led Sony Interactive Entertainment America for two decades, said the console market needs a robust Xbox to restore the rivalry that once drove innovation. In a recent interview he recalled the "golden years" of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era, when competition pushed both platforms to improve hardware, launch exclusive titles and energize the broader video‑game industry.
Layden noted Microsoft’s recent restructuring and layoffs – around 3,200 jobs – and warned that a single dominant platform could slow development cycles, raise production costs and diminish consumer choice. He argued that a financially strong Xbox would benefit both Microsoft and Sony by keeping the market competitive, encouraging experimentation, and preventing the industry from becoming risk‑averse.
His comments come amid ongoing debates about the future of traditional home consoles and the growing influence of large‑budget blockbuster games.
