Ecuador gears up for 2026 sectional elections as parties name mayoral and regional candidates

Ecuador's political parties are finalising their internal primaries ahead of the sectional elections scheduled for 29 November 2026. Avanza selected former Quito mayor Jorge Yunda as its candidate, while the Social Christian Party (PSC) awaits poll results to decide on its Guayaquil mayoral nominee. In Cuenca, New Generation and Unidad Popular held primaries, naming Pedro Palaciosa for mayor and Raúl Delgado for the Azuay prefecture, among others. The Revolution Ciudadana movement, suspended by the electoral tribunal, formed an alliance with the Amigo list, endorsing Pabel Muñoz for Quito mayor and Alexandro Tonello for the Pichincha prefecture, as well as Juan Pablo Molina as the Correísmo candidate for Guayaquil mayor.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) reported receiving 309 applications for the 2027 Citizen Participation and Social Control Council (CPCCS) and 505 requests from organisations to supervise internal democracy processes, while also opening the electoral calendar for updates to voter registration and alliance filings. These steps advance the preparation for the 2026 local elections across the country.
