Former Spanish Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos Sentenced to 24 Years for Corruption

Spain’s Supreme Court sentenced former transport minister José Luis Ábalos to 24 years in prison for involvement in a criminal network that exchanged favours for property. The court found that Ábalos received a villa in Marbella and a chalet in La Línea de la Concepción, paid for by businessman Víctor de Aldama, in return for ministerial actions that benefited Aldama’s interests, including the attempted licence for the hydrocarbon wholesaler Villafuel.

The ruling also cited other alleged benefits, such as the issuance of pandemic travel documents for Aldama’s associates and various administrative interventions. Co‑defendants Koldo García and Aldama received shorter sentences. The judgment marks the first conviction in the “Koldo” case and underscores the court’s view that the property was given as a direct quid pro quo for official favours.
