Former Syrian Interrogator Sentenced to 26 Years for Torture and Rape in Dutch Court

Dutch courts sentenced Rafik A., a former Syrian detention‑center interrogator, to 26 years in prison for multiple crimes, including torture, sexual assault and murder of detainees. The prosecutor had sought a 30‑year term. The court found that A. personally beat, kicked, electrocuted and hung victims, often naked, and that he derived pleasure from the suffering. He was identified in Druten in 2023 after a tip led the National Crime Squad’s International Crimes Team to his residence.

Victims of the attacks, nine in total, described the brutality and one woman testified that she was raped. Two survivors expressed relief after the verdict, though one felt the sentence was too light. The court stated it had no jurisdiction to award compensation.

The case marks one of the first Dutch prosecutions for alleged war‑crimes committed in Syria, highlighting international cooperation against such abuses.
