South American governments brace for El Niño

Argentina’s provinces are coordinating inter‑institutional strategies to mitigate the expected El Niño impacts. In Formosa and Santa Fe provincial officials presented water‑works projects, flood‑risk infrastructure and a network of safe spaces, while reinforcing collaboration with municipalities, the national government and civil‑society groups.

Chile’s meteorological service warned that the phenomenon will keep storm systems active in the coming weeks, and Colombia’s Atlantic region has activated a contingency plan to address likely flooding and landslides. Paraguay’s weather agency confirmed a strong El Niño presence across the country.

In Peru, authorities highlighted threats to wildlife and trout production in the Ayacucho region, while a risk‑management firm warned that companies in Trujillo face heightened financial exposure from a possible double El Niño event in 2026. Denmark’s government, under President Petro, issued a decree establishing a dedicated disaster‑relief fund to channel resources for national El Niño‑related emergencies.
