Formula 1 adopts gradual power‑split overhaul for 2027‑2028 seasons
FIA and Formula 1 announced rule changes after driver criticism, especially from Max Verstappen, to shift the balance between the internal‑combustion engine (ICE) and the electric motor (MGU‑K).
From the 2027 season the power split will be 58 % ICE / 42 % electric, rising to 60 % ICE / 40 % electric in 2028. Fuel flow will rise by 5 % in 2027 and a further 13 % in 2028, taking ICE power from 400 kW to 420 kW (2027) and 450 kW (2028). The maximum electric motor output will drop from 350 kW to 300 kW in 2027, while the energy‑recovery limit increases from 250 kW to 375 kW (2027) and later to 400 kW. Overtake Mode remains at 350 kW.
The compromise was reached after negotiations with engine suppliers; Mercedes and Red Bull Powertrains supported the plan, while Ferrari and Audi expressed concerns. The proposals will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council in Macau on 23 June for final approval.
