Formula 1 expands power‑unit component limits for 2027‑28 season

The FIA has revised the Formula 1 technical regulations for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, allowing teams to use an additional power‑unit component of each type. Under the new rules, each team may run up to four internal‑combustion engines, four turbochargers and four exhaust systems, while still being limited to three batteries, three electronic control units (ECU) and three MGU‑K units. The change builds on a temporary allowance introduced for the current season, extending the extra‑unit permission to the next two years. The adjustment is intended to give teams greater flexibility in component rotation, help manage reliability risks and support a gradual shift toward a 60/40 split between internal‑combustion and electric power by 2028. It also follows a reduction in the electric contribution to overall power, decreasing from 47 % to 42 % for 2027.
